2018 Year End
2018 was a crazy year for us at KWs Disc Golf. In April we broke ground on building our new house. In December, we moved in! The amount of space that I have to work with is about double what I’ve ever had. My goal in 2019 is to boost inventory from the 3000 discs I currently have in stock, up to 4000 discs. We’ll see how that all pans out. It’s going to depend on my cash flow vs. personal cash needs (which are going to be pretty high this year). I’m looking forward to actually being able to display accessories, and such, properly, instead of in random semi-hidden boxes. This will be a fun journey getting this all built up this year!
On to the numbers!!
My numbers are definitely not as significant as Infinite’s numbers because they are the biggest in the world and carry an inventory 25X larger than my inventory. I do feel, though, that the numbers give a decent perspective when you’re counting thousands of discs. In 2018, I shipped to all 50 states, and 21 countries. New countries that were added to the purchases list in 2018 were: Latvia, South Korea, Israel, and Malaysia. Pretty cool to see the world expansion of disc golf.

As expected, the Destroyer tops the list. I think one surprise at the top is the Streamline Trace. They had an extremely hot release when the disc was launched in Plasma plastic. For months, every time I ordered a stack, they would sell out. At the bottom of the list, not many surprises. I stopped carrying Millennium at the beginning of the year, and the Avenger is an OOP disc that I might have had a couple left over from previous years. The stack of Prodigy drivers at the bottom isn’t really a surprise mainly because the H series discs were always non-sellers. I still have H series sitting here from the first couple months of them being launched years ago. Seeing a lot of Discmania drivers towards the bottom may come as a shock to some. The single main reason that they’re towards the bottom is that there has been next to no Discmania available for dealers to order all year. I’ll get into that a bit more further down. Overall, though, the bottom third of the list has been the norm for the most part.

The Buzzz has regained the top spot for the year! Strong stock sales and huge Full Foil sales has catapulted the Buzzz back up the charts in 2018. The MVP Deflector pushed to number 2 due to unreal launch numbers for a couple months. Overall, it has settled in to average numbers. The Innova Mako3, month over month, is definitely our best selling midrange. The Buzzz and Deflector capitalized on special releases and launch month booms, but the Mako3 is consistently at the top without any specials. Overall, though, not many surprises. The bottom of the list is pretty common. Prodigy mids have been non-sellers here for years, and the other bottom dwellers have also never been good sellers.

Well, Innova dominates yet another year. It’s expected, though, because they offer so many more molds. MVP jumped up to the number 2 spot. DD and Lat64 were right behind. Discraft saw a nice jump up this year after a few years on a downward trend. I’m sure that will continue that trend with their big signings. McBeth Sig Series discs will be coming soon and will be a huge boost to Discraft.
The big one, I think, is Discmania only accounting for less than 4% of overall sales, as opposed to 6% in 2016 and 8% in 2017. There is a reason for this. Discmania has been out of stock on pretty much everything all year. For the first quarter, they were literally out of 25 different mold/plastic combinations. For the 2nd quarter, 19 combinations. For the rest of the year, over 10. I literally could not order 75% of their most popular mold/plastic combos for most of the year. Now that they’re moved into their own giant space in Colorado, we should hopefully see a big ramp up of stock in the warehouse.
Prodigy kept it’s downward trend here unfortunately. Everyone else pretty much held their own. Millennium/HyzerBomb are now out of the store, except for a few Mortars that have been sitting here.

We can see that the amount of molds offered may not correlate well with total discs sold. Some are close, but some are a ways apart. This stat is pretty important to me to see what’s hot and what’s not. Based on this data, I am able to check and see which molds have not been selling. I know there are molds that I shouldn’t even carry, but I’ve always wanted to have a couple of everything in stock. There are definitely molds that sit on the shelf for months on end. One of my goals in 2019 is to bring those percentages closer to each other by not offering molds that aren’t selling well.
